With a BA in creative arts from the University of Massachusetts, Nathaniel Smith traveled to Denmark in 1980 to attend the graduate program at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen. After arrival, Nathaniel Smith discovered the world of design. In design both architecture and art merge to create, in its best examples, usable art. He switched from the art school to the Danish Design School which he attended from 1981 to 1985. At about the same time he also began his first practice, ARK Design Studio, together with two Danish designers, Bo Seedorff and Jesper Larson. ARK quickly made a name for itself and exhibited at galleries in Scandinavia and Germany. ARK designed and produced a variety of home goods and furniture that mixed materials not usually combined: steel and stone, glass and steel, wood and plastic. Each product became a small piece of architecture, many of which were portrayed at galleries as monoliths juxtaposed against photos of buildings and larger structures. Several products sold very well through Danish design galleries and as far away as Japan and USA.
